WELCOME
Welcome to the GIS Division of the Rockland County Planning Department, a multi-functional unit which serves the Planning Department as well as many other County agencies. Although digital data about Rockland County existed prior to 1993, it was not until after 1993 that the Planning Department became the lead agency responsible for developing the County’s GIS system.

The GIS system grew out of the digital tax mapping program and was originally developed to help the County’s planners make better land use decisions. However, as the system became more advanced, the GIS system became a multi-faceted tool useful to many other County agencies.

Disclaimer

The Department is now in the process of developing an enterprise GIS system which would incorporate a single GIS data server accessible by other County agencies. This would allow other agencies to use and share data more efficiently. Currently, staff from ten different County departments and agencies have been trained to use GIS software for map production and analysis.
